With postal identity cards becoming more popular, the postal department is considering adding more information and providing improved services.
Since its launch in 2008, the Chennai city region of the department has issued over two lakh identity cards, which is accepted as a document for address proof by several government and private agencies.
On an average, nearly 5,000 identity cards are being issued every month. Officials of the postal department said, at present, cardholders’ details like name, address and photograph are being printed on the identity cards. The department is now planning to add mobile numbers and Aadhaar card numbers to the list of details.
These cards are used as proof to open bank and postal accounts, and get ration cards, LPG connections and passports. Officials said customers may walk into any post office and apply for a card by paying Rs. 270. The cost of the card under the tatkal system is Rs. 600.
“We are now delivering the cards through posts. Under the earlier system, customers had to come in person to collect their cards,” an official said.
However, residents complain that it takes a few months to obtain a card. While cards have to be delivered within a fortnight under the tatkal system, they otherwise have to be provided in three weeks.
